It’s no secret that it can be a struggle to create a killer Instagram feed. We all grapple with what image to post next, and question: does it look cohesive, does it look inspiring?
So, what’s the secret to a co-ordinated theme?
Well, it’s no secret, but there are many tools to help you create a consistent grid layout or theme for your Instagram account.
One of those is to use a grid layout template.
Once you’ve decided how you’re going to plan your posts, the next step is to pick a theme.
8 Instagram Grid Layout Ideas to Use on Your Feed
This is a very popular and effective style used by brands. It’s where you alternate between two types of posts – e.g. a quote and an image.
Another option is to alternate between a dark image and a light image, or minimal tile with a busy tile, to create that checkerboard effect.
2. Colour coordinated theme
A colour coordinated theme is similar to the checkerboard theme where you alternate tiles – but you have a bit more creative freedom with the colours.
Instead of sticking to two colours, you might like to choose a colour palette and use that as your guide for posting. You might also choose to add a quote every now and then that fits in with your colour theme rather than having to do it for every second post.
This is a popular style amongst photographers and storytellers. It allows brands to showcase multiple images from a shoot in an orderly fashion.
It’s also a great way to tell a story as you can use the whole row for one story.
4. Rainbow coloured theme
This layout requires a lot more effort than other themes. Basically the colour transitions every 3, 6, 9 or 12 images. The idea is to focus on one colour and then transition to the next colour using the colour wheel as your point of reference.
It definitely looks great and has maximum impact!
5. Puzzle grid
This layout also requires a lot of planning to execute. The challenge can be to make sure that each tile can stand alone on its own, as that’s the way it appears in people’s feeds.
6. Landscape images
If you are a landscape, travel or street photographer, this is a great way to stand apart from your competition.
Instagrammers that enjoy a more editorial style like this theme because of the white space and minimal feel.
Using the same preset or filter on your images is one of the easiest ways to create your signature style. You can create your own preset, or use filters from various apps such as Instagram or VSCO.
It also helps set the mood of your brand – are you into B&W images, bright whites, faded moody shots etc.?
The key is to pick one – and stick with it!
8. White borders
Using white borders has the same effect as the landscape images layout – the extra white space adds more breathing space between photos and helps your images stand out.
Over to you
Regardless of which theme you select, the most important thing to remember is to be consistent.
Also note that you don’t need to keep the same theme forever. You brand will keep evolving, and so will your visual style. At the end of the day, it’s okay to refresh your theme every once in a while.
